Blackberry loses most famous customer: Pres. Barack Obama

The notoriously addictive Blackberry device is bound to lose very soon its most famous and most powerful user to date: US President-elect Barack Obama.  As the most tech savvy US President ever elected, Pres. Obama has been known to send emails using his Blackberry constantly.  He will have to surrender his Blackberry soon as it will definitely be a security and a legal issue considering that the President’s written correspondences will all be considered as public records under the Presidential Records Act.  Who would ever think that as he became the most powerful man on this planet, that he would now be deprived of one of life’s basic necessities.  I guess if John McCain had won this would be a non-issue to us gadget freaks…Read Full Article

Blackberry Curve 8900 launched in T-mobile Germany

RIM and Tmobile Germany recently announced the release of the Blackberry Curve 8900.  It is a crossover design between the Blackberry Bold and the original Curve 8300 series.  It has a full QWERTY keyboard and utilizes the Bold’s 480x360 screen, with enhanced media player with podcast support, a 3.2Mpixel camera with video recording, WI-FI and GPS, and runs on the reliable EDGE network.  Hopefully, RIM should be releasing this new model to other countries including the U.S. by early next year.  This year alone, RIM is scheduled to release three new models in the US:  the Pearl Flip for Tmobile, Bold for AT&T, and the much awaited iPhone-killer Blackberry Storm for Verizon. Android G1 cheaper to build than the iPhone

New data released by research group iSuppli Corp. indicates that the Android G1 costs about $144, which is about 10% cheaper than the iPhone, which has a bill-of-materials cost of around $160.  Anybody who has seen and held both phones would dare not disagree.  Lacking the buzz and hype of the iPhone 3G, the Android powered G1 also lacks the design and “wow factor” to be even considered at this point as a legitimate contender to the newly crowned king of the mobile phone market in the US. iPhone is now No.1 in the U.S., displaces Motorola Razor

It’s the changing of the guard.  The new face of American ingenuity in the mobile phone market is now the iPhone.  It replaced the V3 Razor, which for the past three years had been milked for all it’s worth by industry pioneer Motorola.  The Razor had been applauded for its sleek design when it first came out but it just seems like a decade-old technology compared to the new features that iPhone offers.  While features, design, and functionalities entirely differ between these two icons, it should be noted that Apple is mimicking the pricing strategy that Motorola had used to flood the market with their flagship product.  Both had started as having a very steep pricing structure and had gradually lowered to a level that is more appealing to the mass market. Motorola embraces Android OS

Industry pioneer Motorola is banking on the Android operating system to help get itself out of its current slump.  After their megahit cellphone in 2004, the V3 Razor which sold millions worldwide, the company has been relegated to a mere spectator in the morphing of the cellphone industry into what is now becoming a market for smart mobile phones led by the iPhone and Blackberry.  Under its new leadership, Motorola will be letting go of several operating systems including global market leader Symbian, in favor of the Google-backed Android OS and Windows Mobile for its mid-range and high-end smartphones respectively.  Read Full Article

Android G1 to be sold at Walmart for $149

Just barely a week since the launch of Google and Tmobile’s G1, it was announced that the latest phone expected to rival the iPhone will be sold at Walmart stores at a discounted price of $149.  This is roughly a $30 discount as compared to the $179 price tag when you get it at Tmobile stores and authorized dealers.  The timing and the pricing strategy for this phone can be considered as quite unusual and highly aggressive as it has not really received a fraction of the hype that Apple had enjoyed, quite deservingly, when it launched both 2G and 3G versions of the iPhone.  We’ll have to wait and see if this marketing strategy will work in G1’s favor or are we really seeing a downwards trend in the pricing structure of smart mobile phones…  hint: $99 iPhone anyone? Apple is now 3rd largest phone manufacturer, edges RIM

In a span of 16 months since the launch of the first iPhone, Apple is now the third largest phone manufacturer in the world, behind Nokia and Samsung.  So far, 13 million iPhones have been sold worldwide and Apple edged-out the iconic Blackberry in the financial fourth quarter alone.  It is this yardstick of excellence which has allowed Apple to gain the most loyal of customers for their Macs, iPods, and now the iPhone.  Read Full Article

After rumors early this year of the development of the  Blackberry BOLD, Research in Motion found it to be the right time to announce the release of their new product on the same day that Google launches their own Android-powered G1.  While the G1, feature-wise, is  not a direct competitor with the Blackberry line of products as of yet, RIM is taking no chances and will release the much-awaited Blackberry Bold early next month.  Read Full Article

iPhone reaches milestone: 200 million App Store dl’s

Don’t rain on my parade!  Google might as well tell that to Apple’s Steve Jobs.  On the same day that Google launches its very first Android-powered mobile phone, the G1,  Apple announces a phenomenal milestone for the iPhone:  200 million application downloads on its App Store in just over three months since the launch of the iPhone 3G. The G1 will have the Android Market similar to the App store but Apple has raised the bar just way too high for Google.  Mark this day, the mobile apps war has official begun!  Read Full Article

Can Microsoft acquire Research in Motion??

After a failed bid to gobble up Yahoo & Co., is Microsoft looking to acquire Research in Motion?  RIM’s share prices have dropped by more than 60% since its peak three months ago and it might be a sign for Microsoft to wield their might once more and attempt to buy into Canada’s favorite tech company.  Windows Mobile currently has 12% of the global mobile OS market share while RIM has 17%.  Combining both would create a fierce battleground for the smartphone segment between the iPhone, Blackberry, and Android-powered devices.  Read Full Article

Unlocking the Android Phone

After all the hype surrounding the jailbreaking  and unlocking of the iPhone 2G (and quite possibly the iPhone 3G), now comes another device in the market that is sure to make some noise in the hacking community, the first ever Android-powered mobile phone, the G1.  The G1 is manufactured by HTC and will be offered in the US by Tmobile come October 22, 2008.  An unlocked version of this phone will surely surface in the market soon after its official launch date.  It is however important to note that here in the US, Tmobile’s 3G service works in a different frequency as compared to AT&T.  Everything else should work with AT&T sans high speed data services. The calm before the Blackberry “STORM”

It has been more than a year since Apple’s iPhone had entered the cellphone market which has been touted as a complete success and had along the way eaten up on the dominance of RIM’s Blackberry devices in the lucrative smartphone segment.  And in the past 18 months, the rest of the handset manufacturers, Blackberry notwithstanding, had watched the iPhone become the most sought-after tech gadget by consumers worldwide.  Now, the wait is over.  Research in Motion apparently has been working double-overtime to come up with the their own “iPhone Killer” and has announced the release of the Blackberry STORM.  The Storm will be a touch screen device and will be initially offered in the US under Verizon Wireless.
